Rhetorica comes from the word ‘rhetoric’ or the art of persuasive speech.  In classical times, rhetoric was one of the three arts of discourse (the other two being grammar and logic).  Also see Aristotle’s definition – he refers to it as “a combination of the science of logic and of the ethical branch of politics”.  However, in the modern world, rhetoric as a term can be controversial, as it’s often associated with the incendiary rhetoric of the likes of Trump.  We like the fact that it has these multiple meanings and historical and academic references (in the UK, the classics, Latin and Greek, is major area of study at university).  This is all part of its identity.  ‘Rhetorica’ also has a feminine quality, sounding like a woman’s name.  As we’re a female dominant business, that also appeals.

Non-fiction requires a customised approach

Non-fiction presents unique challenges in terms of audio production. Unlike fiction, there is not the narrative flow nor different characters and voices to hold the listener’s attention. In addition, graphs, diagrams, formulae and images may need to be converted into text and research into correct pronunciations and further background is often required.

How does Sound Understanding provide an optimal listening experience for your customers – the curious and enquiring listener?

Sound Understanding is an audio production company specializing in non-fiction books and articles. Our primary objective is to produce audiobooks of the highest quality that reflect the thought and expertise that has gone into writing them. This requires attention to detail at every stage of production. Our team has years of experience as producers, editors, proofers, researchers, and writers.  We approach each manuscript with a focus on how we can create an optimal listening experience while ensuring integrity to the text. We also work with academics, and, where necessary, will involve subject-matter experts.

With access to both physical studios and an extensive home recording network, Sound Understanding can guarantee that we will meet your publication deadlines, even when faced with challenges such as Covid-19 restrictions.
